Liverpool fans want legend Michael Owen removed from the club’s list of International Ambassadors.

The supporters have setup a petition to this regard after the retired star referred to Manchester United as ‘we’ while doing punditry work for BT Sport on the night of the Europa League final.

Since the launch of the petition, over 15,000 people have signed it so Owen could be sent out from the programme. The petition on Change.org reads:

“Michael Owen has been a disgrace towards his position as Liverpool’s International Ambassador and he must be stripped from the position immediately. Michael Owen openly supports rivals and shows zero respect to Liverpool, until it suits him.”

The petition added that the supporters did not take the incident of referring to the Red Devils as ‘we’ lightly and that it was the final straw. It added that since Liverpool were the ones “paying” Owen, he should “give 100 per cent to the club.”

Owen made his name at Anfield, scoring 158 goals in 297 matches. His efforts at Liverpool earned him a move to Real Madrid to join the Galaticos where he featured alongside former England star David Beckham. He spent just a year at the Bernabeu as he failed to make impact. Many describe this as his greatest undoing in his illustrious career.

After an injury ravaged time with the Magpies upon return from Spain, he moved to Man United in 2009. He was eventually released with him ending his career at Stoke City. Till date, he is seen as one of the best English strikers to have played the game.
